Abstract

This study is a reflection about the institution of the “Mayorazgo” in modern Extremadura (ss. xvi-xviii) from the perspective of history. The paper approaches, after a previous historiographical analysis, family power through the possession of the land and, finally, the projection of the Mayorazgo as a mechanism to keep the family position, as an element of distinction and prestige as a determinant of social a world in which inequality.

  • Miguel Rodríguez Cancho, University of Extremadura

    He has directed different doctoral theses presented, defended and valued with the highest qualifications. He has also made numerous publications, stays in foreign centers, communications and presentations at congresses; organized meetings and scientific conferences as well as other professional activities of a social, informative, academic and management nature, totaling more than 35 years dedicated to the UEX. He has participated in various national and regional projects. His research focuses on the Social History of the Population, Organization of Space and Control of the Territory together with the Theory, Methods and Sources of History. He has been coordinator of the G.I. Gehsomp.
