Abstract

An altarpiece of the sculptor of Alcántara Pedro de Paz, complemented with paintings of Gaspar Gallego, two artists who worked in the North of Extremadura in the late 16th century and early 17th, is documented. All this has been possible thanks to the discovery of several epigraphs located on the occasion of the recent restoration of the piece. Also there are analyzed the mural paintings that have appeared behind the altarpiece, dated in the year 1566 and that we attribute to the painter Juan de Ribera.

Author Biography

  • Florencio Javier García Mogollón, University of Extremadura

    University Professor. He develops his teaching and research work at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (Department of Art and Sciences of the Territory) of the University of Extremadura. He began his studies at the University of Salamanca (common courses) and has a degree in Philosophy and Letters (specializing in Art History) and a doctorate in Geography and History from the University of Seville.  He has dedicated a good part of his research activity to the study of Extremadura's historical-artistic heritage, from prehistory to contemporary times, in its various aspects: architecture, sculpture, painting and sumptuary arts, especially silverware, tilework, popular ceramics and railings.  He has also published some studies on iconography, has been the curator of several exhibitions and has directed doctoral theses (some with an extraordinary award) and research works of special relevance, contracted with public administrations, and national and regional R&D projects. He has attended numerous national and international conferences as a speaker.
