ON TENNESSEE WILLIAMS AND THE RENEWAL OF THE NORTH AMERICAN THEATRE IN 20TH CENTURY
Keywords:
theatre, contemporary cinema, Tennessee Williams, antirhetoricism, mithology, theatre renewalAbstract
The study tackles the uncomfortable position of Tennessee Williams’ ‘theatrical adventure’ from its beginnings in the 1930’s until approximately the mid 1960’s in 20th-century American literature. The reason for this uncomfortableness is precisely his continuous positioning against his country’s rhetorical tradition in literature in order to carry out, through various materials, a deep renewal of the dramatic genre which, through these three decades, becomes precisely the opposite, that is to say, antirhetorical, a style that points towards neutral transparency. There is an emphasis on Williams’ ability to use personal biography and mythology in particular as the main innovative and surprising characteristics of his works.
