THE "NATION OF EXTREMADURA" AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SALAMANCA DURING ITS CLASSIC STAGE

Abstract

Students nation, also known as natio, included university pupils from the same region in order to defend their interests. Peasantry and kinship were essential for their groups and their relationships. With regard to University of Salamanca, where eight different students nations arose in Medieval Age, Extremadura natio had a great number of pupils in the register books. For this reason, our research aims on the students from Extremadura during the last quarter of the 16th century, when pupils rising was a symptom of the general prosperity of the University of Salamanca.

   

Author Biography

  • Francisco Javier Rubio Muñoz, University of Salamanca

    Doctor in History with International Mention, after defending the thesis under the direction of Professor Luis E. Rodríguez-San Pedro. His lines of research focus on the History of Hispanic Universities in the Modern Age, teaching staff, prosopography and Digital Humanities and the Didactics of History.

    He is a University Expert in Genealogy and Archives from the University of Córdoba; Master in Advanced Studies and Research in History. Spain and the Ibero-American World, with Extraordinary Prize and Master's Degree in Teaching Secondary Education and Baccalaureate from the University of Salamanca.

    He currently works as a professor in the area of ​​Didactics of Social Sciences (USAL), and is a full member of the IEMYRhd, within the GIR Cultural History and Alfonso IX Universities (CUNALIX). He is also a full-time researcher for the Research Project “The Crown and the Universities in the Hispanic World. Centuries XVI-XVIII”, of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In addition, he is secretary of the Studia Historica magazine. Modern History (USAL), indexed in WOS, Scopus and the FECYT Quality Seal.

    He has carried out several international stays, specifically at the Research Institute on the University and Education (IISUE) – National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and at the Interuniversity Center for the Storia delle Università Italiane (CISUI) of the University of Bologna. He has participated in congresses and given seminars and national and international conferences (Spain, Mexico, Italy, Holland, ...), has publications in monographs and specialized magazines and has received several research awards.
